Co-op Week 2023
October 16, 2023

Co-op Week is an annual Canadian celebration of all things co-op and the contributions they make worldwide!

Cooperatives are member-owned, member-driven organizations that operate on the principle of prioritizing people over profits.

When you support a co-op, you're not just making a purchase or utilizing a service; you're actively investing in your community and its members. Unlike traditional business models, where profits may benefit a select few or outside shareholders, cooperatives ensure that their profits are equitably returned to their member-owners or reinvested in community-focused projects. This cycle of mutual support fosters sustainable growth, strengthens community bonds, and ensures that resources are used to best serve the collective good.

The 2023 theme for Co-op Week is "Co-operating on Climate Action". Find some activities this week, including a contest, from Coop Canada here and others from Alberta Community & Co-operative Association here. We just launched a battery recycling program within our locations and have made other efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. Read about those here.

When you become a member at South Country Co-op (for just $5!), you become an owner with a vote each year to help steer the co-op and where we go as a company. You join 63,000 other local people who believe in supporting local, helping the community, and keeping profits here in Southern Alberta. Learn more about our co-operative here.

Whether you know us as a food store, or an agro centre, or stop by regularly to fill your gas tank, we're here for you. Co-op is about people. Co-op is about community. Co-op is about Southern Alberta. And We Are Co-op.
