In the aftermath of the unparalleled flooding in British Columbia in November, Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) stepped up as a long-time partner of the Canadian Red Cross to raise money for relief efforts. Co-ops across western Canada stepped up quickly, and began asking for donations at the tills.

Thanks to this initiative, and the generosity of guests across our trading area, we were able to raise $13,400! Both South Country Co-op and FCL matched the donations from our guests to further top up what we donated to the local branch of the Red Cross on December 16, after just nine days of fundraising!

The horrific flooding that began on November 14 became a state of emergency for the province and cut off parts of southern B.C. from the rest of Canada, including the largest port in the country. Highways and train tracks were disrupted, and landslides trapped motorists on parts of the roads, forcing them to be airlifted to safety in the days after the natural disaster began.

The effects from this event are being felt across the country, but especially with farmers, ranchers, growers, and producers in B.C. who have lost homes, businesses, and livestock. As their closest neighbouring province, B.C. provides Alberta with fresh produce, meat, and more products. We also have fellow co-operatives in the affected areas, and we’re wishing them a speedy recovery from any damage or issues caused by the flooding.
